This project was made possible through the support of the Neighbourhood Small Grants program and was designed to strengthen community connections by creating a free, inclusive, and welcoming movie night for residents of Port Clements. The goal of the project was to bring neighbours together in a relaxed setting, reduce barriers to participation, and create a shared experience that encouraged social connection.
The planning process focused on accessibility, simplicity, and community impact. I began by selecting a movie that would appeal to a broad range of ages and interests, ensuring families, seniors, and individuals could all enjoy the event. I then purchased the appropriate public screening license and the movie itself using grant funds, ensuring the event was organized responsibly and in accordance with licensing requirements. Additional funds were used to provide free snacks for attendees. Offering free entry and refreshments was a key part of the plan, as it ensured that cost was not a barrier and that everyone felt welcome to participate.
Community outreach and promotion were done through local channels and word of mouth, keeping the event approachable and community-led. The Port Clements Recreation Commission provided valuable support by helping with the venue and overall setup. Their involvement helped create a welcoming environment and reinforced the collaborative nature of the project.
There were no significant challenges during the planning or implementation of this project. The clear scope and strong local support allowed everything to run smoothly. Attendance exceeded expectations, with a large turnout from across the community. People of different ages and backgrounds attended, and many stayed afterward to socialize and connect with one another. The high level of participation demonstrated a strong community interest in low-barrier, inclusive events.
Through this project, I learned that small-scale initiatives can have a meaningful impact when they are rooted in community needs and supported by local partnerships. The movie night showed that providing a simple shared experience can foster belonging, strengthen relationships, and create positive community energy. I also learned the importance of collaboration and clear planning in making community projects successful. Overall, this project met its goals of building connection, increasing participation, and creating a welcoming space for neighbours to come together.
