We applied for a grant to be able to host a Drum Making Workshop. As an expert drum maker and teacher, Allan gathered the materials and I found our participants. We hosted our event in partnership with the Backpack Program’s Friday Market at the Strathcona Community Centre. We had a great turnout of diverse people from throughout our community, from the young to the old; lots of laughs were had as we worked together to help everyone figure out the steps. We were able to learn more about First Nation’s culture and protocol around drums. Did you know the first drum you make you must give away as a gift?
The workshop was a hit, and we look forward to doing another in the future. Thank you to the Vancouver Foundation, Neighbourhood Small Grants, and the Government of Canada for making this awesome collaboration happen and for supporting our local communities!
