Prior to our neighbourhood gathering, the Courtenay Fire Department completed a Neighbourhood Wildfire Assessment for our area. On May 23, they also organized a community wood-chipping event, which was a great success. Many neighbours took the opportunity to remove deadwood from their properties, helping to reduce wildfire risk.
Our gathering was held on our patio on a beautiful July afternoon and was attended by 22 residents. Invitations were sent through our neighbourhood email list and Facebook page.
Our neighbourhood champion organized a display of emergency preparedness materials, including a map of all the homes in our area. She also demonstrated how to build a simple air purifier using a box fan and furnace filters. We demonstrated roof sprinkler systems and discussed how they can help protect homes during a wildfire.
Two amateur (ham) radio operators attended the gathering and demonstrated their equipment while discussing the role that amateur radio can play in maintaining communication during emergencies. We also had a productive discussion about ways to improve community awareness, communication, and support during emergency situations.
Appetizers and iced tea were served, and there was time to socialize. We were pleased to welcome several new residents, expanding our neighbourhood network and strengthening connections within our community. The gathering was informative, enjoyable, and helped build relationships that will support our neighbourhood’s resilience. We are planning another meeting during the winter months to continue building on this momentum.
