War and Peace – How may Afghanistan communities empower themselves?
On October 5th, 2024, Nazia Kakar, Team Lead of the Employment Team in DIVERSEcity, shared her personal journey from Afghanistan to Vancouver, Canada. Slide by slide. Insights and inspirations were shone from Nazia’s powerpoint. She smiled with warmth and wisdom, facilitating discussions around settlement issues. Centered on job change, cultural adjustment and identity development.
I heard stories I hadn’t heard of. It was mainly delivered in Dari and Pashto. Adults were greeted, welcomed, embraced and connected. The group especially shared concerns on the current housing issue. Where can newcomers in need stay? Royal and noble. High-rises and price.
The event started at 11am in City Centre Branch of Surrey Public Library and completed at 3pm in an Afghanistan restaurant on a sunny Saturday. The spacious room in the library set the tone for the event – both adult discussion and informal childminding happened in the same room. Spacious versus packed. Where are the rest?
Salute and kido to those serving with respect, love and heart. Honourable men and women were met.
