We had a really great get together!
The goal was to bring together people who had worked together to fight the 2023 Bush Creek East fire on Simpson Road in the North Shuswap area of central BC. There are 19 homes on Simpson Road and although not all residents stayed behind, everyone was helpful in some way. We had hoped to gather during summer but as is typical, some were available, some were not. Ultimately we just made the decision to have the gathering and those that could make it would come.

It was a really nice September day and about 25 of the 40 planned were able to join us. I slow smoked a nice prime rib and rib eye roast, we brought in potato salads, veggy trays, buns and other goodies. We sat in the back yard for a couple of hours, some played yard games but most relaxed, had a beer (they brought) and chatted. When it cooled down we headed inside for dinner and more conversation.

We reminisced about those horrific early days when the fire bore down on us, and the efforts to fight it higher on the hills before it could get to our road. We remembered the challenges during the 3 weeks of no power and few incoming supplies. And we celebrated that our road was saved and all the efforts were worth it. It was decided that next year the August long weekend would be the date and we’d all plan to meet again and make sure that everyone involved could get together and remember the challenges of that time, and the fact that we all made new friends during some very difficult days.
