On November 9th, we held a successful First Nations Song Circle at the Fireside Lounge of the Native Education College. Russell Wallace, a First Nations elder, facilitated a wonderful singing workshop. He gave a talk about the history and kinds of songs and then led us through some singing warmups. When our voices were warmed up, Russell taught some beautiful First Nations songs. We concluded with a delicious feast. There were 15 participants who attended the entire event and more joined us for food after the singing. Everyone enjoyed themselves! Singing and eating together was a heart-opening experience and I was reminded of the importance of both! Most of the participants were First Nations, students or staff of the Native Education College. I felt honoured that, although I am not First Nations, these traditional songs were shared with me and with everyone. I look forward to the next circle!
