Follow the Light: Photography Workshop for Kids
Neighbourhood kids gathered with their DSLR cameras, ready to learn, explore, and get creative! We started by learning the basics of manual camera settings, then headed out on an adventure to the beach, photographing anything that caught our eye along the way.
Together, we explored the difference between simply taking a picture and making art with a camera. I encouraged the kids to look at familiar things in new ways, experiment with light and composition, and discover their own creative perspectives. I am always amazed by the images children capture when given the opportunity and encouragement to explore their creativity.
After a snack break filled with good laughs and conversation, we continued our adventure into the forest, photographing the changing autumn leaves and water flowing over the rocks. Along the way, we practised slowing down, looking closely, and noticing the beauty in everyday things we might otherwise walk right past. Photography is such a wonderful way to connect with our surroundings and appreciate the little details that make our community special.
Our youngest participant was just five years old, while our oldest was fourteen. Although that might seem like a big age gap, it was beautiful to see how everyone came together around a shared interest. The kids encouraged one another, celebrated each other’s discoveries, and grew more confident as the workshop progressed. It was a lovely reminder of how creative activities can bring people of different ages together, build connections, and create a welcoming space for everyone to learn.
I have been a professional photographer for 17 years, and being able to share what I have learned with the next generation is incredibly meaningful to me. Watching the kids light up as they discovered what they could create with their cameras filled my cup more than I can put into words.
I am so grateful to the Neighbourhood Grants program for making this opportunity possible. It was a joy to share my passion, encourage young artists, and spend a beautiful day exploring the place we call home together.
