Our project, Gathering the Grandmothers – Nuun Hana’ack Shakdoa Ggatshwil a’amt, was held outdoors along the Skeena River on the traditional territory of the Kitselas people. With support from Neighbourhood Small Grants and Kitselas Nation, we created an all-nations gathering for Indigenous female Elders from across Northwest BC. The intention was to offer a calm, supportive, land-based space for rest, gentle movement, and reconnection.

Planning for the event centered on keeping the day accessible, welcoming, and grounded in wellness. Because Elders have varying mobility needs, we chose activities that were gentle and inclusive. The schedule included chair yoga, breathwork, energy healing, guided river and garden walks, harvesting vegetables, making sage bundles, sharing songs, and time to sit together and enjoy refreshments. Holding the gathering outdoors by the river added to the sense of peace and connection to the land.

We kept the event simple to organize. The main logistics involved preparing the space by the Skeena River, arranging chairs and shade, and coordinating RSVPs since we needed to keep the group size manageable. Catering was hosted by K5T, which helped ensure that participants had nutritious snacks and beverages throughout the afternoon.

The gathering took place on Sunday, September 7th, and the turnout reflected genuine interest from Elders across the region. The slower pace of the day allowed participants to take part in activities at their own comfort level. Many spent time walking at the river’s edge, sitting in the garden space, or connecting with others between activities. The natural setting supported a grounded and relaxed atmosphere.

Feedback from participants was very positive. Many women shared that they appreciated having dedicated time and space for themselves, especially in a way that honoured culture, movement, breath, and connection to the land. Several expressed interest in having this gathering continue on a regular basis and noted the benefits of bringing women together from different communities and nations.

One of the key things we learned is that simple, land-based wellness gatherings for Elders are deeply appreciated and have a meaningful impact.

We hope to continue offering this gathering in the future and develop it into a regular opportunity for rest, connection, and holistic well-being for the women who attend.
