Joe Chatsis and I prepared many of the hoops leading up to June 18th, little did we know that a whole season of fun and community would blossom that day. Many people took part in helping us decorate the hoops, and enjoying tips on getting them moving that sunny afternoon. Two youths showed a lot of promise with the Cree style of hoop dance that Joe taught. With the help of Hastings Urban Farm staff, a plan was made for Joe to return to the the Farm every Thursday to continue teaching and one of the youths was also offered a volunteer position to help set up and put away the hoops every Thursday. The DURC Drummers were also invited to hold their Thursday drum group at the Farm, where they provided beautiful sound and a rhythm for the hoop dancers to share. Joe, his two eager students, the DURC Drummers, and anyone eager to watch or join in, gathered at the Farm every Thursday for the rest of the summer season. Joe and his two students performed at the Powwow held at the Farm, and a handful of other community events. The two students received their own sets of hoops to dance with, and the remainder of the hoops remain at the Farm, accessible to everyone who would like to enjoy them.
