The inhabitants of Carpenter‘s Lane neighbourhood came together to enjoy an Oktoberfest street party, sharing BBQ’d bratwurst, a potluck lunch, iced tea and lemonade. We invited Pottery Playground, a local business, to lead a pottery house sign workshop. The grant covered the materials, and Pottery Playground volunteered their time to teach. Our project was inspired by the idea of creating a community vibe and feeling of welcome. As a neighbourhood, we have experienced a turnover in house ownership and some newly built houses are now occupied. The clay project hosted by Pottery Playground connected the neighbours with one another. My favourite moment was watching the older kids help the younger kids make their clay signs. It was heartwarming to see the teenagers put away their electronics and actively engage with their community.
The day was bright and sunny, the weather warm. Our neighbourhood is more interconnected and has a closer-knit feeling because of this event. Thank you, Neighbourhood Small Grants, for making our event possible.
