Nakusp is a charming village of 1,500 people, surrounded by smaller communities that it serves. As the Chairperson for the Arts Council, I strive to offer extracurricular opportunities for our youth. We host a drama club in the fall and spring, led by one of our board members who works in the film industry. Additionally, we present Music in the Park throughout the summer, a free community event.

This year, I proposed dedicating one of our Music in the Park evenings to the youth, featuring music and art. We invited the talented 8-year-old Piper Alstad to kick off the evening with her rendition of “Coat of Many Colors” by Dolly Parton. The community showed great support, with approximately 200 attendees, including families and tourists, coming out to enjoy the performances.

We also featured two local up-and-coming bands, giving them their first public performance. To add an artistic element, we provided a variety of art supplies, including paints, markers, stickers, wooden cutouts, and printed backpacks for the kids to personalize. The local thrift store generously donated books and stuffed animals in good condition to give away. We also offered popcorn, hotdogs, candy bags, and drinks.

The Glimmers and the Steam Donkeys are exciting new bands we discovered at one of our Musician Mingles for emerging artists. The Glimmers, with their fun and funky style, delivered an energetic set that had the kids dancing and enjoying themselves. On the other hand, the Steam Donkeys, an older generation band, played wholesome, nostalgic music that everyone appreciated.

Our goal is to continue this event in future Music in the Park series. One of the challenges we faced was ensuring the event was enjoyable for all and selecting projects that would interest the children and youth. Fortunately, our choices were well-received, and I hope to build on these ideas for future kids’ nights.
