This community-based workshop aimed to provide residents of Port Coquitlam with accessible skills in clothing repair and upcycling, fostering creativity, sustainability, and a sense of connection. It took place in a private art studio in Port Coquitlam in June 2025.

Participants learned practical sewing techniques such as adjusting garment length, patching holes, and modifying fit, enabling them to extend the life of their clothing and reduce textile waste. The workshop was free and open to all skill levels, creating an inclusive space for learning and collaboration. Participants were encouraged to bring their own garments and apply these newly gained skills in their daily lives, including expressing their personal style, developing a sense of creativity and freedom, and transforming clothes into pieces that truly fit them.

I provided all materials and equipment (sewing machines, needles, thread, patch fabrics, and garments) to ensure accessibility for all participants. The workshop was advertised by placing posters in several libraries in Coquitlam and inviting people to book a seat via email. The overall organization was straightforward.

Participants brought clothing to repair, as well as home textiles and accessories. They learned how to alter garments (such as cutting a dress to transform it into a skirt and a top), hem clothing, add elastic waistbands, and thread and use a sewing machine.

The sessions were highly collaborative, as some participants had prior sewing experience and supported others. For participants who did not bring items to repair, I offered a simple project: they learned how to make a small zippered, lined bag.

One lesson learned for future sessions is that I could reach more people and accommodate more participants with access to a larger space. Having a volunteer to help run the sessions would also be beneficial. While I currently have eight sewing machines, participants could easily share them, as there are many activities available while waiting, such as hand sewing or embroidery.

The atmosphere was friendly and fulfilled the goal of offering a space for community gathering and creative learning that will hopefully continue in the future. If you are interested in collaborating on this initiative, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
