The story of how line dancing arrived on Galiano is rooted in community curiosity and one person’s passion. Local resident Kendall McLaughlin first discovered line dancing while spending time with friends in Vancouver. Kendall occasionally shared short videos of these gatherings on social media, never imagining they would spark something larger. But one day, a Galiano local reached out after seeing a clip and asked the question that set everything in motion: could line dancing come to Galiano Island?
That single request became the catalyst for a new community offering. Kendall invited their line dancing instructor friends from Vancouver to bring their expertise to the island, and the first session in November 2025 drew an enthusiastic crowd of 35 participants. The event was entirely supported by participant donations, a testament to the community’s eagerness and appreciation. Building on that momentum, a second session was held in March 2026 with support from the Neighbourhood Small Grants program. Attendance grew to 38 participants, confirming the island’s strong appetite for dance, movement, and shared experiences.
The event atmosphere is described as welcoming, energizing, and deeply fun. Parents danced alongside their children, longtime residents met newcomers, and the hall filled with laughter, encouragement, and the satisfying rhythm of dozens of feet learning the steps together. The intergenerational mix—ranging from young children to elders—created a sense of connection that is rare and deeply valued in a rural community.
The success of these events has created real momentum. With such strong community interest and a clear desire for accessible, intergenerational activities, Kendall and the visiting instructors are now planning two additional line dancing sessions later this year. Kendall is often approached by Galiano residents asking when the next event will be, a sign of how quickly line dancing has become a beloved addition to Galiano’s cultural life.
In a rural community where opportunities for shared recreation can be limited, this initiative has opened a new door—one that invites everyone in, regardless of age, experience, or ability. These line dancing events have demonstrated the power of grassroots arts programming to spark joy, strengthen community bonds, and create lasting impact.
