Last November, a windstorm damaged our much-loved Little Library by the Sea, breaking it beyond repair.  Thanks to support through the Neighbourhood Small Grants program, we were able to rebuild the library stronger, brighter, and better than before!

This time, I took several lessons from our first version to heart. Instead of using thinner wood and white acrylic paint, I opted for a sturdier build with thicker wood and a more robust door to help it withstand weather and regular use. I painted it myself using a bright, bold exterior latex paint. I opted not to include the sea creature designs, as I plan to continue to touch up the paint each year as needed. Not only is it more weatherproof, it’s also brighter and inviting.

One of the highlights of this rebuild was being able to reuse the original post it was fastened to. That saved time and energy, as we didn’t have to go through the process of requesting permission with the City of Nanaimo for a new location. I timed the installation/reopening to coincide with World Ocean Day on June 8th as a way to celebrate ocean stewardship and the educational purpose of the library.

The rebuilt library is slightly larger than the original, which allowed us to expand its offerings. In addition to the resource guides, I’ve included children’s non-fiction books about sea creatures and local marine life. This was inspired by the many students from nearby schools who often visit the shoreline on field trips and were especially drawn to the original library.

Now, just a month after being reinstalled, the library is already receiving lots of positive feedback from community members. The materials are being used respectfully (everything remains accounted for!), and we have a healthy stockpile of additional books and guides to replenish it as needed.

This project reaffirmed the value of small, community-driven initiatives and the importance of adapting and learning from experience. The improved durability and improved design of the Little Library by the Sea 2.0 will help it last for seasons to come, and hopefully continue to spark curiosity and learning for all who pass by.
