My project idea was to form neighborly connections by working to improve the public laneway running through the center of our block. I had also hoped to encourage others who live along the length of the laneway to improve upon the space behind there own properties.
I felt that if the area was more tidy and safe, neighbors would be more aware of what was happening basically “in their own backyards”.
I began by weeding and trimming the growth along the back fence line. Next I purchased a couple young flowering trees and planting soil that will continue to grow and add colour to the laneway area. I then installed an array of pretty solar lights in the shape of butterflies, flowers and wheat stalks along with 2 solar motion lights. The addition of lights make the area feel much safer.
As I had hoped, the people living in 3 of the houses sharing our laneway saw me working in the area and came over to talk on multiple occasions. I learned that they had all lived in their homes for 40 to 50 years. They began to share parts of their lives with me from raising families, a passion for gardening, had been a teacher, had great grandchildren, and 1 who had dealt with losing a spouse. I in return shared my story.
As I had hoped, it was a great way to get to know the people living on all sides of the block. The laneway looked much better and can continue to improve as I add more plants and decorations.
Maintaining the laneway will keep us connected, increase the esthetics of the area and let others know we are all watching what takes place in our neighbourhood.
