The alley block party was conceived by our small strata of 6 in the early spring of 2025.  The focus of the party was to meet new and old neighbours, connect with the Block Watch rep for our street, and enjoy a BBQ lunch as an opportunity for connection.  All strata members took on a job to make the party happen, and as a result, there really were no glitches.

The sun shone, folks arrived in our alley, and the event took on a life of its own!  We did informally ask our neighbours, “What does community mean to you?” and offered sidewalk chalk to write their thoughts.  Responses included “caring, friendship, support, and connection”.

As a result of the event, an informal electronic chat group was formed as a tool to inform neighbours of any suspicious activity, garage sales, lost pets, and any further community events.

The process of applying for the grant was very easy, and the turnaround time was quick.  Many thanks to the Nanaimo and Vancouver Foundation for this grant.
