We invited all the residents in our complex – 153 families. We had a BBQ with free hamburgers, hot dogs, and salads/veggies, face-painting, bubble blowing, balloon and chalk art, button making, a door prize and a place to meet your neighbors. People brought their children, parents, grandparents and dogs. 162 people RSVP’d and 141 attended plus we had 10 neighbors who volunteered at the event.
The idea behind this was to introduce neighbors to each other and find interested neighbors who wanted to join a new community association. We had 21 people interested in joining and our first meeting will be in January 2016. We will be talking about building a community garden, organizing more community events and discussing how to make our neighborhood safer and more inclusive!
We even started a community Facebook page. Pretty successful as far as we can tell – we want to do this every year!
