As part of 100in1Day Vancouver I decided to organize a community breakfast for residents of my apartment block.
100In1Day is a one day event aimed to change how people interact with their cities. Originating in Bogotá, Colombia in 2012, it has encouraged hundreds of one-day community-based interventions in cities around the world with things like street art, urban gardens, beautification projects, social events, and improvements in city infrastructure all being profiled in a city-wide festival. This year it took place on June 4, 2016.
An ‘urban intervention’ can be as simple as bringing people together with free high-fives or a community potluck. Or if you want to do something really fun you could create an art installation or organize a street party! Take a look at the website: vancouver.100in1day.ca
So for my urban intervention I decided to organize a community breakfast for residents of my apartment block. I did this because I realized I didn’t know many people yet cross paths with them most days. I hate that awkward moment in the elevator when you recognize the person but don’t really know them and don’t know if you should start a conversation. Or when you see your neighbour walk into their apartment and you kind of want to say hello but they look like they are in a rush.
my idea was to host a breakfast in the community garden for everyone to come and get to know each other. I arranged some garden games, food and drink and put up posters in the elevators and mail room.
The event went really well! I had over 50 people come by in rotation within the 3 hours I was set up. Not only did I get to meet some of the people in our building but other people made connections too. The food was a great hit and mostly the children enjoyed playing with the games. We were lucky to have the sun come out too!
Overall, I think it was a success and I will certainly be hoping to host something similar in the future!
Unfortunately the sign for the photo waiver blew away and I didn’t realize until it was too late so I am unable to post any photos.
