We have been organizing a street BBQ for the past 3 years on Mander Road, on Gabriola Island. It started small, with local neighbors and a potluck. In subsequent years, we have had some guest musicians join us so we could provide music.
We are fortunate that a neighbor owns an empty lot, so the BBQ is held there. We have donations of tables and BBQs. With another couple on the street, we donate the hot dogs, hamburgers, buns, and condiments. The other neighbors participate in bringing other potluck dishes – salads, fruit, veggies, other side dishes, and desserts.
We have had requests from other neighbors to attend and bring guests and family members, so the event has grown. This year, we are involved in a newly formed band, playing folk music, and this was our first public performance!
The street is very much enjoying the event, reconnecting with neighbors and friends, and enjoying the sunny day together.
