The Newspaper Club Social was an initiative that first started in June 2023, hosted by Richmond Secondary School Newspaper Club students. Our goal was to host an event connecting the different newspaper clubs from secondary schools in the Richmond district, and to foster relationships between likeminded individuals. The annual social events consist of a guest speaker from Richmond News, awesome refreshments made possible by this grant, and each attending school prepares a short presentation about a topic relating to journalism/news!
Our social event was amazing this year, with a good attendance number and great food. Some challenges did appear throughout the process, including keeping up communication with the other clubs, managing this event on top of our monthly publishings, and during the event we had to quickly adapt to time constraints. However, the social event was still a huge success, and we were pleasantly surprised by how willing people were to engage with other students from different schools. We heard many people say that this event give them inspiration for their clubs going forward, and discussions about future collaborations between schools were initiated!
This was such a rewarding experience, both in terms of the actual event and the behind-the-scenes process of organizing everything! The most memorable moment was when Maria, our guest speaker from Richmond News, opened the floor for questions and we got to see the passion and thoughtfulness of our attendees. There were so many amazing questions and Maria’s responses really gave us insight on the realities of being in the journalism field in today’s world. RHS Newspaper Club is so incredibly grateful for this opportunity that was only made possible by receiving a grant! We hope to continue this social event and foster an appreciation of journalism for many years to come!
