At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic my wife suggested that I post a daily guitar tip online that would give people who were stuck at home something to do. I proceeded to do so, thinking that I may do it for a couple of weeks…well, it lasted 69 episodes.
I received a lot of positive feedback from the community. Experienced players and beginners on the guitar reached out to say thanks, offer suggestions for topics, and share their progress. The Responsive NSG from the Bowen Island Community Foundation allowed me to purchase a better microphone to improve the sound of the episodes.
Over the course of the project I learned a lot about myself as a teacher. I have taught for 20 years but trying to come up with a new topic every day and keep it simple enough to be approachable for people could sometimes be quite a challenge.
All the episodes can still be found on the Facebook group “Bowen Island Everything Else” if anyone wants to do some digging.
I believe this project helped take people’s mind off the stress of COVID (at least for a moment) and maybe introduced some to the wonderful puzzle that is the guitar.
