With the world slowly returning to a new normal, after many long years of pandemic times, we thought it would be a great time to bring families and neighbours together, while encouraging everyone to get outside and move and connect. The pandemic had most of us locked down inside, and the Bluewater neighbourhood has had many homes sell during that time, with new neighbours moving in and never meeting or knowing any of the old. With many new families, it seemed like the perfect idea to be able to bring a community sports equipment piece in and get the children out together.

Thanks to the generous NSG grant and with the help of a handful of families, a basketball hoop was ordered and installed, a block party was organized, and the neighbours gathered to celebrate and mingle.

We chose to install a sturdy basketball hoop that would withstand time and weather, as well as be on wheels to move and store for the winter months. With some back and forth on location, we opted for a private driveway nearby where many children live, so that they could enjoy playing ball safely at any time. This hoop will see children grow and develop new skills. The summer months passed with many games played amongst the neighbourhood children and while it’s being put away for the winter months, I know the return of it this spring will bring many smiles to the neighbourhood children.

In addition, we gathered for a neighbourhood block party. All in all, it was a wonderful day and experience, many stories were exchanged and laughs were had. We came together as a group and were able to bring something to our neighbourhood that will be enjoyed for years to come.

We would like to express our appreciation to NSG, the Vancouver Foundation, the Bowen Island Municipality, and Lisa Wrinch of the Bowen Island Community Foundation.
