Fostering Kindness and Inclusion
The Buddy Benches were painted by students and parents at Hammond Elementary and were constructed by inmates at Fraser Regional Correctional Centre. These colourful seats help spread a message of kindness and inclusion to students.
The five buddy benches are special places for kids to sit when they are feeling lonely or need a friend to play with. Sitting on the bench is a signal to other kids to come ask them to play. It is a simple idea to eliminate loneliness and foster friendship on the playground.
The benches are well-used as measured by anecdotal stories from Hammond Elementary students, teachers, principal and parents.
