We are a group of single parents in the New Westminster area who came together for various events over the summer of 2014. The existing support group for single mothers in New Westminster doesn’t run through the summer months, so the NSG funding helped to organize family-friendly and welcoming events.
We went to the park and made planters out of pop bottles, hit the movies twice for showings of the Croods and the Box Trolls, went bowling, and had picnic lunches and barbecues. This gave our children a chance to meet and play with other kids with similar family backgrounds, and gave parents a safe place to talk about their situations (both similar and unique!)
Friendship and solid support networks make all the difference to families of any composition, and we were so happy to have the chance to run these events and meet more single parents in the New Westminster area. We hope to be able to continue next year!
