This was our 3rd annual Pollinator party hosted in my front yard. I planned it with my 8 year old daughter. We discussed the purpose, activities that she would lead and what local business we would support by purchasing food from them to share at the event. She also took the initiative to create a poster that announced the event to our neighbours. As a volunteer Butterflyway Ranger with the David Suzuki Foundation my objective is to encourage my neighbours to create pollinator friendly gardens to help support the decreasing pollinator population. During the event I introduced many of the pollinators in our area and discussed how we are dependent on them. My daughter lead art activities and showed how to build a bug hotel. The gathering was a success with about 10 neighbours showing up. We discussed our gardens, the healing power of plants and made tentative plans for creating a shared garden in our neighbourhood. One key element to this event was to keep it small by hosing it for only our neighbourhood. This was important in order to form bonds between neighbours. Last year we expanded to invite our friends who live outside of the the neighbourhood and that created a less intimate gathering.
