We had a great afternoon in late July on a working farm owned and operated by a Queer family! They provided farm tours, u-pick strawberry, chill-zone and an play area for small children.
We set up several 10×10 tents for shade and space for snacks. We provided veggie wraps, chips, sweet treats, cold drinks and fresh veggies from the farm. Many people brought their own picnics.
We had an art station and sent kids on a rainbow scavenger hunt to encourage them to connect with nature and each other.
We had over 35 people through the day including visitors from Vancouver, people with and without children, couples and groups of chosen family/friends!
We learned that Gibsons is a better location as there seem to be more young Queer families in the Gibsons and Roberts Creek communities than there are in Sechelt.
Challenges:
Our major issue was toilet access, and had initially budgeted to rent a port-a-potty, however during the planning stages the farm installed an outdoor accessible toilet.
Parking was another issue as the farm stand needed to be accessible. We created signage and clearly communicated parking options in all marking. We didn’t have any issues with parking.
