The Comox Valley Pride Prom is truly a labor of queer love and community. Although much of the behind-the-scenes work is completed by adult volunteers (most of whom identify as queer/trans/gender-nonconforming), youth in our community take a leadership role in many ways. Pride Prom 2025 was the 3rd annual event, and the original Pride Prom began as an idea formed amongst youth at a high school GSA meeting. Everything is done by volunteers: grant writing, decorations, booking a photo booth and face painter, DJing, sound, reaching out to community sponsors for door prizes, etc.

It is important to us that the event is completely free of charge for all participants, as we strive to be as barrier-free as possible. We also continually strive towards all accessibility needs (for example: a quiet space, gender neutral and wheelchair accessible venue and washrooms, free earplugs, etc.), and this past year, we included a volunteer counselor for any emotional support needed (in addition to first aid, clearly marked adult volunteers for anything participants need, etc.). One student used Pride Prom as their Capstone project for their graduating year, and it was wonderful to see how empowered they have become as a key organizer of the event. Feedback from attendees included “This is the best night of my life!”, “I’ve never been to such an inclusive event”, and “I wish I could always feel how I do right now”.

It is no surprise that queer youth – and adults, for that matter – feel easily alienated in our current political climate. The need for safe and inclusive spaces and queer-specific events is more important now than ever. It can be challenging for students to remember that they are part of a broader community outside of their schools, and that our community is here for them. A particularly special part of Pride Prom is that youth get to see queer adults and drag performers, and see that they belong here and can have a future here too. It is truly an intergenerational event!

The NSGrant was so imperative for this event, as we are completely non-profit and volunteer-led. We appreciate your support and would like to thank you from the bottom of our queer hearts. Thank you!
