Started with Queensborough Children’s Festival on June 22 at the Queensborough Community Centre, I planned and hosted 6 reading flash mobs events throughout the summer. We visited Ryall park, Moody Park, Grimston Park, Hume Park, and the last event we partnered with Summer Block Party (https://www.facebook.com/events/916852781674801/) to bring the whole community together.
Thank you for Literacy New Westminster for providing us hundreds of new books, also with the support from NSG we got to purchased used children’s books that in good condition. Each individual event we stayed at the location for 4+ hours, provided free books for kids among age 0 to 16. We had literacy related crafts under the canopy, bubble machine to attract kids’ attention. We also worked with New Westminster Park and Recreation with their pre-orginized summer program to serve the children in our community. Over all, we had thousand of children in our community that participated in our program, and many parents interested in participating in more literacy related events in this community. We believe we have not only raised the awareness of the importance of literacy, but we have brought families together for the good time we shared reading in the parks.
