Quilters from the Piece Arch Quilters’ Group came together to create two beautiful quilts for the Peace Arch Hospice Society for the Melville Hospice Home. These quilts were thoughtfully designed to drape over gurneys and body bags as individuals took their final journey from the hospice. Previously, gurneys had been covered with a plain white sheet, which, while respectful, lacked the warmth and comfort that a quilt could provide.
Our intention for these quilts was to offer a sense of dignity and respect to those who had passed, while also providing comfort and solace to their loved ones and hospice staff who witness this solemn moment. By replacing the white sheets with quilts, we hoped to soften the emotional impact of these transitions and create a more compassionate environment.
As we grow older, illness and loss become a more present part of our lives. Many of us have personally experienced the care and support offered by hospice facilities. This project was a meaningful opportunity to give back, to honor those who have passed, and to show gratitude for the dedicated caregivers at the hospice. The quilts serve as a symbol of care, compassion, and community support.
To make the quilts even more meaningful, we chose symbolic designs. One quilt features doves, representing peace, while the other displays sparrows, symbolizing protection. Both patterns were selected to convey comfort and reassurance. A small committee of five volunteers guided the project, while a larger group of our members came together to stitch the quilt blocks and carefully assemble the quilts. Sewing days were held at Camp Alexandra throughout the winter, offering an opportunity for members to connect, share stories, and work together toward a common purpose.
The project was met with overwhelming support from the group. Many members felt a personal connection to the hospice society, having experienced its compassionate care firsthand. Their dedication and enthusiasm made this project a true labor of love.
The Dove quilt was dedicated to Carol McN., a beloved member of the Piece Arch Quilters’ Group, who passed away suddenly in the fall. Carol was a compassionate and energetic leader, heading up the group’s Community Outreach Program. Her dedication to service and her warm spirit were deeply cherished by all who knew her. The Dove quilt serves as a tribute to her generous heart and unwavering commitment to the community.
The Sparrow quilt was dedicated to Patricia H., who faced long-term health challenges with resilience and grace. Despite her own struggles, Pat remained committed to supporting the Wee Care program, contributing her time and talent to create quilts for those in need. She even helped make the very quilt that was later dedicated in her memory. Her legacy of kindness and dedication continues to inspire us.
Many thanks to committee members and helpers. Their hard work and commitment to the project have made a meaningful difference to the project.
We are deeply grateful to Neighbourhood Small Grants for their support of this project. Their generous contribution made it possible for us to acquire the materials needed to create these meaningful quilts. Knowing that these quilts will provide comfort and dignity to individuals and their loved ones in their final moments brings us great pride and gratitude.
Through this project, we hope to convey a simple yet profound message: Every life is precious, and every farewell deserves to be marked with care, compassion, and respect.
