We received a Small Neighbourhood grant to build two raised garden beds with a bench attached to them. We are happy to report the new bed and bench look great and are being used by neighbours. We have received many positive comments from neighbours and people passing by. We put in a few plans but anticipate more work will be done in the Spring to add new soil and new plants.
After speaking with our neighbour on the corner of West 23rd and Columbia who had also received a small neighbourghood grant (Polinators Pathway) we decided to shape our planters as an hexagon so they would look like other planters on the block. We also committed to reserve a section in our planters for plants that will attract bees and we joined efforts in ordering the wood and building all the planters together on the same day.
The planters were built and installed by two neighbours with the help of a hired carpenter. At least other 4-6 people helped move the soil, fill the planters and plant the beds. Since then, we have received many positive comments from neighbours. We believe it is a very positive addition to our street and a great conversation piece!
