This event was a beautiful collaboration between dance and vocal expression. We invited community members to join us in a meadow in our local forest to learn a simple choreography (taught by a local dance instructor), and a couple of short songs (shared by a local song leader). We then put these two offerings together and had everyone rotate from singing inside the circle to dancing around the outside.
We created a digital and physical poster for our event. We sent it out to singing and dancing groups in our area and put up posters in town. We originally had 20 people signed up, which was our ideal number, but it was a week where many people ended up getting sick and cancelling, so we ended up with 9 attendees total. This created a lovely, intimate environment, but also made our planning of things quite a bit quicker, so I learned that it is always valuable to have extra backup activities brainstormed. We thought that if anything, we would take longer than we planned, but we ended up finishing a little early.
I feel so grateful to have had such beautiful moments through this event, where singing was so soulful and full of life, and dancers created a safe, intimate circle of movement. The biggest teaching was that having an idea and bringing it to life is a wonderful gift to yourself and your community. Go for it!
