Planning this year’s event came with a few unexpected challenges, especially since the block party our neighbourhood enjoyed last Labour Day had set high hopes for a similar gathering. Because I was away during the long weekend, we needed to find an alternative plan that would still bring neighbours together as the weather began to cool. Before I went ahead with this plan, I contacted Yunuen to ask about different ideas that were being considered, and ultimately, a fellow neighbour suggested hosting an indoor event, and we were able to book the community room at the Seniors’ Centre–a familiar, accessible space where our strata typically holds AGMs.
With about a month’s notice, our property manager sent an announcement to all residents, and a few weeks before the event, my daughters and I hand-delivered 44 flyers inviting neighbours to a Halloween Pizza Party. We made a point of checking in with some of our older neighbours to ensure they had transportation and to personally encourage them to join us. We planned food, refreshments, and games for all ages, hoping to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
The evening itself was a wonderful success. Neighbours shared a meal, caught up with one another, and, most meaningfully, had the chance to talk about how members of our strata are doing. These conversations helped highlight some of the support needs of our aging community members and allowed neighbours to coordinate care more intentionally. As the evening wrapped up, those who stayed a little longer joined in a lively round of Codenames, adding a fun and memorable finish to the night.
I am truly grateful for the Neighbourhood Grant, which made it possible for our strata to gather, strengthen relationships, and deepen our sense of community. Thank you for supporting opportunities like this that help us stay connected and care for one another.
