This summer the neighbourhood small grant supported my skill sharing, a weave of breath work and food security knowledge through land-based healing arts in Mt.currie old reserve with elders & youth.
We encouraged our community to come together to make a healing garden: boxes at hip height, affectionately called VIP boxes for seniors to work comfortably and enjoy sitting, we started our own seed library, with seeds saved to build resiliency, recipes shared for home made medicines/food goods, a flower garden specifically for the “missing children” with a heart embellished gate, hand salve from flowers infused from the garden, and dried herbal tea for spiritual first aid kits.
Together we made yoga mat straps as well as bolsters from fabrics, ribbons, and burlap. This particular garden art activity made the aerobic equipment more accessible by reducing a cost barrier and encouraged pride in self care. Participants loved the versatility of their bolsters for safe yoga modifications in the garden during breath practice which later helped others to kneel in the community garden or during their own land harvesting. With much enthusiasm we have also designed a new mind-fullness indoor shared studio space and decided to continue throughout the winter season in a meaningful way.
Some of the unexpected challenges we faced this year was theft and vandalism which motivates us on the value of inclusiveness for example we hope to make a neighbourhood share box next spring season and a secure tool shed. Thank you neighbourhood small grants!
