Community Street Dance – Year Two Collaboration
Presented by: Arrow Lakes District Arts Council Society & Society for Nakusp Community Events

Planning Process
Organizing the Community Street Dance is an extensive process that begins months in advance. Key steps include:

Securing permission from the Village to close sections of Main Street.
Coordinating with local businesses to ensure awareness and minimize disruption.
Booking performers, both local and out-of-town, to provide diverse entertainment.
Arranging children’s activities such as piñatas, bean bag toss, hoop throw, and chalk art.
Constructing platforms for live bands and preparing event infrastructure.

Despite careful planning, outdoor events carry weather-related risks. This year, the event was postponed due to rain, and showers still impacted the rescheduled date.

Event Results
The Community Street Dance successfully brought people together, fostering connection and celebration. Highlights include:

Entertainment: Four live bands delivered four hours of continuous music, showcasing local talent and creating a vibrant atmosphere.
Family Activities: Children enjoyed interactive games and creative street art.
Business Engagement: Several Main Street businesses remained open, benefiting from increased foot traffic. Nearby restaurants and cafés experienced a surge in customers.
Community Impact: The event encouraged social interaction, strengthened community bonds, and highlighted the cultural vitality of Nakusp.

Looking Ahead
To address challenges such as street closures and limited washroom access, next year’s event will move to a new location that reduces business impact while maintaining accessibility and enjoyment. Planning for the next Community Street Dance is already underway—stay tuned for updates!
