Our Sharon Gardens Summer Social: Pizza, Bocce & Bingo was a wonderful opportunity to bring neighbours together and strengthen connections within our community. Approximately 25 adults and children joined us for an informal gathering featuring pizza, cold drinks, bingo, prizes and, most importantly, plenty of conversation.
The event was intentionally kept simple and welcoming. We wanted residents to be able to drop in, enjoy some food, participate in an activity if they wished, and spend time getting to know their neighbours. Fortunately, the rain held off and we were able to gather outdoors as planned.
One of the most positive outcomes was seeing both longtime and newer residents connecting with one another. New neighbours were welcomed and introduced to others, while residents who already knew each other had an opportunity to spend more time together and develop deeper relationships. Bingo proved to be a fun activity for different ages, with winners receiving small prizes and plenty of friendly competition and laughter along the way.
The biggest lesson for us was that community building does not have to be complicated. Providing a welcoming space, some food and a simple shared activity can be enough to encourage conversations and create new connections. Several residents were already asking when we could do something like this again, which was perhaps the best indication that the event was successful.
We see this gathering as a spark for further community building at Sharon Gardens. Now that we have brought people together, we hope to organize other simple activities that give neighbours opportunities to connect, have fun and strengthen our sense of belonging.
We are very appreciative of everyone who participated and helped make this event successful, and grateful for the Small Community Grant that helped make it possible. The experience reminded us that stronger communities often begin with something very simple: creating an opportunity for neighbours to meet, talk and enjoy time together.
