We live in a multicultural neighbourhood in Richmond, BC. A few years ago there had been a few break-ins in our area and we, Block Watch Captains, wondered what we could do to create a caring spirit in our neighbourhood. A neighbourhood where people would come home, drive into their garages and disappear until they drove out again. We decided that a block party might work to introduce neighbours to each other…and happily, we have had great success! People have commented that they had lived here for over twenty years and never met most of their neighbours…until our Neighbourhood Gatherings.
This was our fourth year having our Neighbourhood Gathering. We have had a great turn out for these parties, this year being no exception. Despite experiencing the first real heavy rain in the area in three months, we had over 100 people coming to mix and get to know their neighbours while enjoying some treats!
We could not do this without the very kind support of our neighbourhood stores (Save-On Foods, Bosley’s, Starbucks and Subway Terra Nova locations), City of Richmond, Richmond Cares Richmond Gives and The Vancouver Foundation’s Neighbourhood Small Grants program. Their support has really made a difference to our neighbours and neighbourhood! Thank you!
