Thai Cultural Experience: Sharing Thai Culture and Bringing Our Community Together
The Thai Cultural Experience project was created to bring people in Lillooet together through Thai food, culture, travel, and language. As a Thai person living in Canada, I wanted to share my culture with my community and help people learn more about Thailand beyond what they may see online or in travel brochures.
The event took place on October 5, 2026, at Elks Hall in Lillooet, BC, with approximately 17–25 people attending. I prepared information about different regions of Thailand, famous tourist destinations, Thai food, and traditions. I also introduced some basic Thai words and phrases because people were interested in learning the Thai language. Participants received a booklet that they could take home and use to remember what they learned.
One of the most rewarding parts of this project was having the opportunity to share my home country’s culture with people in the community. I wanted to create a welcoming environment where people could learn something new, ask questions, and discover that Thailand has many different places, traditions, and cultural experiences to offer.
There were also some challenges. English is my second language, so explaining Thai culture clearly and confidently in English was sometimes difficult. I had to prepare my materials carefully and think about how to explain things in simple words so everyone could understand.
Promoting the event was another challenge. Lillooet is a small community, but people live in different areas spread across the mountains. Some people have difficulty travelling to community events because public transportation is not available. This reminded me that even when people are interested in joining an activity, getting there can sometimes be a barrier.
Through this experience, I learned that community projects need more than a good idea. They also need thoughtful planning, clear communication, and an understanding of the challenges people face. I also learned that sharing culture is a way to build connections, encourage curiosity, and help people appreciate one another’s backgrounds.
I am grateful to the Neighborhood Small Grants program for supporting this project. This opportunity allowed me to share a part of Thailand with the community I now call home. I hope this project has inspired people to learn about other cultures and encouraged stronger connections among neighbours in Lillooet.
