On October 11, 2026, Grade 9 student Jessie Li led and hosted “The South Arm Art Bridge” at South Arm Park, bringing together over 100 community neighbours between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM to make art together.
We initially planned a painted rocks activity in our proposal. However, during early prep work, we realized that pressing real autumn leaves into handmade bookmarks would be much more meaningful—it matched the fall season better, and gave neighbours a lightweight, useful keepsake to take home. Preparation started weeks ahead: our youth volunteers handpicked leaves around the neighbourhood, cleaned and pressed each one, pre-sorted materials, and applied protective films so even very young children could join in easily.
On the day of the event, to make sure everyone had a spot to sit at the park picnic area, we brought two extra tables and eight chairs. We provided colourful markers, craft glues, and mini decorations. It was wonderful seeing families, kids, and seniors sitting side-by-side, chatting and making bookmarks together.
While most participants proudly took their finished bookmarks home, we managed to collect nearly 50 unique pieces for a community display. Jessie cut up recycled cardboard to craft a bold “OUR AUTUMNS” title and arranged the bookmarks on a display board. We wanted to share this piece with the wider community and initially reached out to local community venues, but struggled to find an open display spot. Luckily, Jennifer DeWolff from Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG) stepped in and generously gave us a space at the RCRG office, where the board is currently on display.
Through this project, our youth team learned so much about event organization, solving unexpected problems, and communicating with local partners. We are deeply grateful to RCRG, the City of Richmond, and the Vancouver Foundation for giving us the chance to make this project happen!
