We had so much fun!
I reached out to a local farmer and purchased 65 tomato plants to give away. Kira, from Abernathy Acres, is the super generous farmer. She threw in another 15 cucumber and squash plants, so we had 80 plants to distribute.
I also purchased basil seeds to plant with the tomatoes. My pal Sophie is a master gardener, and she was on hand to talk about growing the plants, companion planting and any other things folks wanted to discuss. I also had markers and plant sticks for any child to decorate.
We set up on the sidewalk in front of a local bakery and attracted the passersby. It was such a wonderful outreach. I had posted the event all over my social media, as well as that of my pals, so we had a really good reach. Plenty of folks came because they had heard about it, and the rest of the folks were people in the direct neighbourhood. I am fortunate in that I am well-connected in the community, so setting it up was easy. Everyone I spoke to was happy to be involved, and there were no glitches. What really thrilled me was how many people were excited to plant with their children or grandchildren. There appeared to be a real desire to teach them where food comes from.
