Empowering Women Through Soccer: Vancouver Collingwood Women’s Soccer
Back in August 2023, I had an idea that would spark both my passion for soccer and desire to foster community connections: creating Vancouver Collingwood Women’s Soccer. As a woman who loves the game, I wanted to bring together others who shared that passion but often couldn’t find opportunities to play. My goal was to provide a welcoming space for women of all skill levels to come together, stay active, and build meaningful relationships through soccer.
Vancouver Collingwood Women’s Soccer is about more than just the game—it’s about empowering women to stay active, build confidence, and connect with others. Whether they play casually or professionally, my goal is to help women in our community continue playing the sport they love, no matter their age or skill level.
Indoor Sessions and Community Growth
From November to December 2024, I had the privilege of leading indoor drop-in soccer sessions. Each session welcomed up to fifteen players, divided into three teams. We introduced a fun, competitive element, ensuring everyone felt included and engaged. Whether they were returning players or newcomers, each woman brought something unique to the game, and the energy was contagious.
I am deeply grateful to NSG for providing the funding that made these indoor sessions possible. Without this grant, the cost of indoor facilities would have been a barrier. The timing of these sessions was critical. The winter months, often a time of heightened stress due to the holidays, provided the perfect opportunity for women to unite, get active, and support one another in a positive, low-pressure environment.
The sessions were not only about soccer, they were about creating a space where women could unwind, connect, and strengthen our local community bonds.
Looking Ahead: More Soccer, More Community
As we look toward the new year, I’m excited to continue organizing both outdoor and indoor sessions for women in the Joyce-Collingwood neighbourhood. The momentum we’ve built is just the beginning, and I can’t wait to see more women join us for future sessions. Soccer is about more than just the game—it’s about creating a supportive community where every woman can thrive.
