With the generous support of the Neighbourhood Small Grant, we successfully hosted “Winged Wonders: Planting for Bat Conservation at Copley Community Orchard.”

This event provided the community an engaging and educational opportunity to learn about bats’ crucial role in our ecosystem. BC Bats delivered an insightful talk about local bat species, their importance in pollination and insect control, and ways to support bat conservation efforts.

After the presentation, neighbours planted native plants that attract night insects, helping create a sustainable food source for bats. This hands-on component reinforced the conservation message while enhancing the orchard’s biodiversity.

The event concluded with a potluck, where neighbours shared food and enjoyed live performances by local musicians Jim Dery (Violinist) and Helga Toppazzini (Accordionist). This social aspect strengthened community ties and provided a celebratory atmosphere.

With over 40 attendees, the event brought together neighbours eager to learn and contribute to conservation efforts. Many participants appreciated the informative presentation and enjoyed the opportunity to take direct action by planting native plants. Several attendees shared that they had never considered the connection between bats and biodiversity before, highlighting the event’s impact in raising awareness.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Neighbourhood Small Grant, BC Bats, the talented local musicians Jim and Helga, and all the volunteers and attendees who contributed to the success of this event.
