It was a success!
Although many noted that it seemed like I put this on single-handedly, the key was invoking community partners and empowering them to take the lead on constituent elements. The Nakusp Development Board led the Blue-Ribbon competition, a cornerstone of the event, though it will be important to ask them to bring their own labour for setup and teardown next time. No hard feelings, as I did get to taste the award-winning brownie! Gilberts Auto Parts led the RC car race, and we learned that perhaps more ‘heats’ would not only increase fairness, but extend the timing of the event. Zucchini races, where kids made and raced their cars down a hill was a great success, and really showed how kids will make fun if you stand back and let them. All cars were raced until they were salad! Kootenay Savings Union donated loonies for a treasure hunt in the playground, which gave a chance for all kids to have a few dollars for a treat that day. Another highlight was the petting zoo, which almost didn’t happen due to the large amount of work involved, but thanks to their finding their own sponsors, it was a huge draw! Free bouncy castle (thanks to Chamber of Commerce), and bike obstacle course (Nakusp Bike Society), with music donated by Dr. B and the Biscuit rounded out the show, with a ski swap and pass sales from Summit Lake Ski Hill made sure there was lots for everyone to do. Already looking forward to next year, though on a Sunday, not Saturday (the local soccer coach was kind enough to move games earlier so kids could come this time), and hopefully more volunteers for cleanup! Thanks again for your help to cover the basic expenses for an otherwise free day for all in the community!
