We hosted our annual community event called the Shaver Shindig. We host several local musicians and bands, we dig a hole in the garden and cook a whole pig for 12hrs. We invited the neighborhood and town and we ask people to bring a side for the pig.
We had quite a few neighbours and friends helping with this one. We held a raffle prize for a fun activity. Our neighbour donated a Margaritaville blender.
The bands love the location and now that its been our fourth shindig, everyone is pretty keen to perform and participate. Our neighbours are invited and know about the event. I posted little flyers on the surrounding post boxes. We try to shut things down just after midnight to respect the noise levels. The pig was a success! We have been learning year by year about how long it needs and the method in placement in the ground and over the fire.
Its a lot of work to organize, but so worth getting everyone together in the shoulder season in this small ski town. Its great for everyone’s mental health, building community, and just having a good time.
Clean up is pretty good. We have bins all around for garbage and recycling. Again, all the neighbours offer and chip in with cleaning up the next day.
We’ve really enjoyed hosting these, and love to hear new local artist perform and share their talent.
We hope to host for many years to come and I think the town does too, as its becoming a bit of a thing!
