The gathering started in a yard on Engles Road in Campbell River. We started with a ceremony using tobacco and seeds grown and gathered from the yard. Indigenous drum to start things off, then smudging with sweet grass, then general conversation as we walked through the garden.

The group was made up of 14 people who were guided through the day by me, the Project Leader and Elder, and my sister, Iona. We met under cloudy and rainy conditions in June 2025.

We shared treats of bannock with berry jam and peach jam that was made from products harvested on the property. We also enjoyed berry pies. We refreshed with tea, coffee, juice, and water. Then we shared many stories and conversations.

As a leader, I, too, learned from this gathering. I learned about human nature as well as the natural world. I believe the goal of knowledge sharing was achieved with our neighbours and friends.

Participant comments:

On Monday, I attended what I call a “Better Homes & Gardens Paradise”. Cactus of so many varieties and in bloom! Gorgeous, never thought I would find this on Vancouver Island.

So meditating. I also learned so much about soil and fertilizers. I look forward to visiting again.
