Beacon Books: Sharing the Love of Literature

Beacon Books began as a simple idea—to spark connection, joy, and curiosity through the power of sharing stories. Thanks to the generous support of the Neighbourhood Small Grant, that idea grew into a vibrant Little Free Library that now lives at the heart of our community.

The library itself has its own special story. I acquired it from a local senior who spends his free time woodworking, crafting projects with care and character. Built entirely from upcycled materials, Beacon Books is not only a home for stories, but a reminder that creativity and sustainability go hand in hand.

Bringing the library to life truly became a neighborhood effort. Two of my neighbours and my husband helped install the library, turning a patch of yard into a welcoming gathering place. My children and I painted it together, a purple colour that makes it instantly recognizable—a cheerful little landmark meant to draw readers in.

In addition to books, Beacon Books offers small tokens of kindness: dog treats for four-legged visitors and bookmarks for readers of all ages. These simple additions reflect the spirit behind the project—an invitation to pause, enjoy, and feel at home.

The library is also featured in Pokemon Go and people have shared their usernames on a note in the library!

The response from the neighbourhood has been overwhelming in the best way. Within days, neighbours eagerly filled the library with books they loved and wanted to pass on. Many took time to stop, chat, and share words of appreciation for the new space.

Beacon Books has quickly become more than a library—it’s a symbol of generosity, connection, and the shared belief that stories can bring a community closer.
