The community seed and seedling swap and hands-on berry and vegetable gardening event happened on April 26th from 2-4 pm at Beaconsfield Park Community Garden.

This great hands-on educational community event introduced more people to how to set up a garden plot to grow fruit and vegetables, including:

  • seeds, seedlings, plants share/swap
  • planting strawberry plants and goji berry cuttings
  • Participants could take home a free small native thimbleberry bush
  • help prepare and seed the pollinator gardens
  • learn about gardening tips, raised garden box
  • composting tips
  • drinks and snacks for participants

We also did some of the activities over the prior week, including:

  • planting a new raspberry and strawberry patch,
  • fixing many raised gardening boxes, and
  • educational fruit tree pruning workshops.

Overall, about 50 people from youth to seniors in the community were involved.

This project will grow local food and increase plants in a section of the park which was formerly grass. This also improves access to gardening for lower-income participants, youth and seniors who don’t have access to gardening space. This improves access to nature for those who come to the park. This will provide ongoing community and environmental benefits and ongoing park beautification.
