We opened the Reconciliation Read and Return Library on June 27, 2026, between 10 am and 12 pm. The library and art by Nova Wolf of Musqueam was sponsored by BC Nurses’ union, the community donated over 70 books by Indigenous Authors, and the Neighbourhood Small Grants funded the event, including bannock, jam, candied salmon and juice boxes for the attendees.
We paid honorariums to Marge Wiley, of the T’laz’ten Nation, who provided the bannock and jam and Nadine Spence of the Nlaka’pamux and Secwépemc Nations, who told their story and spoke of their artwork. VPL was in attendance to provide additional resources for the community. Aside from the pending rain that was expected at the beginning of the week, I had to scramble for tents to cover the attendees and participants, but the rain held up, and it was a small but intimate and successful event.
Nova Wolf of Musqueam Nation did a welcome drumming to start the event and the book box was unveiled to the public. All ages were welcome, and people were able to connect over bannock and jam. I added a counter, and we are (as of today) at 145 people opening the box since Saturday.
I am grateful to NSG for providing the opportunity to gather with the community and celebrate together. This project is hopefully going to continue educating others about Indigenous cultures, stories, art, and the importance of truth and reconciliation.
