The event was planned as a warm, community‑centred celebration, designed to honour the memories held in the space and to give families, former students, neighbours, retired staff, and teachers a meaningful way to say goodbye. A small group of 3 organizers worked in advance to coordinate refreshments, youth activities, and partner contributions, ensuring that the day reflected the spirit of Collettville: collaborative, welcoming, and deeply connected.
One of the most significant challenges emerged unexpectedly. A wind warning was issued the morning of the event, bringing strong gusts that threatened to disrupt displays, signage, and activity stations. Volunteers quickly pivoted, reassessing the layout and securing materials to prevent them from blowing away. Youth helpers played a crucial role, gathering large rocks from around the school grounds to weigh down items and stabilize the setup. The Merritt Girl Guides contributed STEM activities, stickers, pencils, and tattoos, adding to the variety of experiences available.
