Project Story – Healthy Family Crepes & Waffles Workshop
Our goal was to create a fun, hands-on activity that would bring families together while promoting healthy eating and practical life skills. We wanted parents and children to enjoy preparing food together rather than simply being served a snack. During the planning stage, we selected simple, nutritious recipes that were easy for families to recreate at home using affordable ingredients. We also planned age-appropriate tasks so that children could safely participate, such as washing fruit, cutting soft fruits with child-safe utensils, and assembling their own crepes and waffles, while parents handled the cooking.
Safety was one of our main priorities. We carefully organized the workspace to separate food preparation from the cooking area and ensured that parents were responsible for operating the waffle makers and cooking the crepes. Volunteers helped prepare ingredients in advance, guided families through each step, and maintained a clean and organized environment. Their support allowed every family to receive individual attention and encouragement throughout the activity.
One challenge was accommodating children of different ages and skill levels. Some children were eager to help with every step, while others were hesitant to try unfamiliar foods or participate in food preparation. To address this, we encouraged families to work at their own pace and celebrated every child’s contribution, no matter how small. Allowing children to choose their own fruit toppings and decorate their creations made them more willing to taste healthy ingredients they might not otherwise have tried.
Parents played an essential role throughout the workshop. Beyond cooking, they encouraged their children, modelled healthy eating habits, and enjoyed spending quality time together. The relaxed and welcoming atmosphere also gave families an opportunity to connect with one another, share ideas, and build new friendships within the community.
By the end of the project, we saw children proudly serving the snacks they had helped prepare and families enjoying the experience together. The workshop demonstrated that healthy eating can be enjoyable, affordable, and easy to practice at home. It also reinforced the value of family involvement in developing children’s confidence, independence, and lifelong healthy habits.
The success of this project has encouraged us to offer similar family cooking activities in the future. If funding allows, we hope to provide additional sessions so that more families in our community can benefit from this meaningful and engaging experience.
