Thanks to the grant I received from the Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives Society I was able to complete my “Positivity Rocks!” project, which was inspired by my younger sister. The goal of this project was to uplift the spirits of my neighbors while also spreading some positive messages through carefully placed painted rocks.
Before receiving the grant, my sister and I had been already placing rocks painted with positive messages along the trails and parks by our house and we had seen the smiles of folks walking by and reading these messages. However, many of these rocks would disappear the very next day and we had both realized that we were running out of rocks and materials to continue creating these painted pieces.
Therefore, upon remembering the grants that Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives offered I decided to take the chance and apply for a Neighborhood Responsive Grant. After getting my project approved, and receiving $250 to use towards it, I was ecstatic as I could finally complete the project that I had been dreaming about.
But, after looking for supplies to purchase for my project, I became surprised as I had never realized how expensive rock painting products actually were; and, as rock painting had become a popular activity that most people picked up on following the pandemic, most of the products were either out of stock or had a long delivery period.
Anyways, after all the products were finally delivered to my house, I was able to start prepping and painting the rocks. I had painted over 150 rocks and let me tell that I definitely underestimated the amount of time and work that a nice painted rock required. It took a lot of arduous work and determination in order to paint the greatest amount of rocks to the best of my ability.
If speaking honestly, I would have to say that it was not the amount of money that determined the outcome of my project; but, more of the amount of work put into the rocks that determined the project’s result. In all, this project really tested my organization and time management skills and I am relieved, as well as a bit sad, that it has finally come to an end.
I just want to give a big thank you to the Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives Society for distributing these grants and allowing people in Richmond to complete their dream projects. It means a lot, not only to the people who are impacted by the project but also to those who organize it. Thanks for making our dreams come true!
